Summer School

Irvington High School offers summer school for the following math courses: Algebra 1A/1B, Algebra 1, Discovering Geometry, Geometry, Honors Geometry, Algebra 2/Trig, and Honors Algebra 2/Trig. All other math courses must be retaken during the school year.

Ohlone Community College: schedule of courses

How Ohlone's math courses* align with IHS's math courses:

  • Geometry at Ohlone does not align with California State Standards and therefore will not give you credit at IHS.
  • Algebra 2 at Ohlone combined with Trigonometry will give you credit for Algebra 2/Trig at IHS.
  • PreCalculus at Ohlone combined with Trigonometry will give you credit for PreCalculus at IHS.

*It is strongly recommended that you do NOT take Ohlone math courses in order to get ahead in math at Irvington. If you want to get ahead, take the course at a state or university college.

Contracts

Irvington High School is the only high school in Fremont that adheres to the "No D" policy. This guarantees that all graduates of IHS will have at least a 2.0 GPA. Students who earn a D grade (usually 60-69%) for a class will be given an Incomplete. Units will not be granted for the course until the student has completed a contract.

A contract is a safety net provided by the school guidelines to help students raise their grade to a passing grade, C-. It is a document created by the teacher that outlines what work must be completed in order to have the student's grade changed. It must be signed by the student, the parent, and the teacher. Additionally, there is a fixed amount of time that the student has to complete the work. If the work has been completed satisfactorily within the given timeline, then the student has passed their contract.

The most common question we receive at Irvington related to contracts is whether or not we give contracts at the end of the Quarter grading period or at the end Semester grading period. Unless otherwise stated, all teachers will give contracts at the end of the Semester grading period.

Some teachers have additional requirements for contracts, so be aware of this when you read their class syllabus (green sheet). For my classes, to be eligible for a contract, a student must have earned at least 64% in all grading categories (not averaged), 80% hw completion, and must have completed all projects for that semester. The contract will be due no later than 1 month after the contract has been issued (the first day of the next grading period). Failure to complete a contract, signed or not, will result in the earned “I” grade being changed to an “NC” grade (not complete), and will result in the student earning 0 units for that semester for the course.

The second most common question we receive at Irvington related to contracts is whether or not we allow contracts be used to allow a student the opportunity to raise their grade from a C+ to a B-, from B+ to an A-, and so forth. While there may be rumors that some teachers allow this, this rumor is not true. This is considered artificial grade inflation after the end of a grading period and is not allowed.
